Swing Perfection

Updated: Feb 14

Perfecting your swing is the most important and first component to learning to play the game of golf. If you're hoping to immediately get out onto the course and start swinging with ease from day one, you might be in for a nasty surprise. It can take up to six months for a beginner to even master hitting the ball the right way. Yes, you read correctly, six months with practice sessions of at least three hours a week to learn the golf swing fundamentals (by an PGA or LPGA instructor). Outside of your coached lessons a minimum of nine holes of just swinging and hitting the ball as far as you can, twice a week is recommended. The practice on the course will help you to understand what your clubs can do. Remember, for the still growing youth the object is to hit the ball as far as you can. You will begin to focus on accuracy once you’ve finished your adolescent growth. There will continue to be strength training as your muscle mass increases during your young adulthood. When starting, it’s all about building confidence in your swing and learning how to strike the ball well.

Swing accuracy is a secondary factor, and it is directly related to your age. Let me reiterate. A body that is still growing is not capable of directing the golf ball because your body is constantly readjusting to your clubs. Once you’ve stopped growing, then and only then can you begin to attack the golf ball and send it in the direction that you want it to go to on a consistent basis. Thus, if you are over 16 and have effectively stopped growing your coach will be ready to train you to hit the ball and direct it to where you want it to land.
